I've been running VMware since v2.x on linux.  I'm at 4.5 and will be
going to 5.0 at the end of the month.

I also got a copy of VMware 5.0 for windows at work.  It seems as fast
on my 1.6GHz/1GB work system (winXP) as my VMware 4.5 on 2.4GHz/512MB
(Fedora) system at  home.  Yeah, apples/oranges.

I've heard from others that VMware Workstation seems to be faster on a
Windows host then a Linux host.  Their GSX server products run Linux
underneath it all.
