I've started using something called Denyhosts (
http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/) to deal with ssh scans. If you need to
use the default port this is very useful.
It watches the sshd log file for multiple login attempts and adds the ip
addresses to /etc/hosts.deny. It's a python script & has lost of
configuration options.
Any ip that tries to login as root or tries multiple logins gets banned.
