Maybe off topic, but I appreciate the sharing.  Well-written, and useful too.

I actually think your message captures the essence of hacking.  Rather
than relying on someone else to do things for us (in ways that are
mysterious and often don't work), using expensive products, we as
Linux enthusiasts revel in the ability to get into the actual
'plumbing' and find ways to make things work the way they should.  And
then we share this information with others so that they too can have
systems that work.  And pretty soon the whole community has systems
that work.  And the world is a better place (with sinks that drain).
