That is not entirely true. Most commercial Unix systems use /opt for major 
3rd party applications. 
In Red Hat/Fedora, KDE applications are in /bin. However, the official KDE 
default directory is in /opt if you were going to download and install KDE 
from a KDE RPM or KDE soruces.
