direct BIOS access from Linux?

I just accessed a web site called www.koders.com which can search most open source code. I put in the search words "get DMI info" and one hit was for a file called dmi_scan.c which is part of the 2.6.10 Linux kernel. Look's well commented and might make a good jumping off point.
