Free web-based email?

improvability at gmail.com

I know this isn't quite a Linux question, but it's privacy related, so I
thought it would be OK to post. Please feel free to respond off-list unless
you would like to open up discussion.
As you can tell, I use gmail. Gmail works really well for me and I am glad
that Google is supportive of Open Source concepts (this isn't the purpose of
this email).
I am concerned about Google's continued push to track users and their desire
to store information. So, I am looking for new, free, web-based email.
Hopefully one that has no obnoxious ads, a good interface, decent storage,
and a decent search engine to find messages. Ideally it will also be a
work-in-progress, rather than one that says "here are our features, hope
you like them 'cuz they aren't going to change" (hello Hotmail?). Does
anyone LOVE the web-based email he uses? Thanks for your input.
Pierre
