I'd suggest he get a gmail account (I have invites).

I have Verizon DSL and don't use it or the Yahoo! service they offer.
However, I did get an opt-out for a class action suit against Verizon for
blocking foreign mail.  Verizon lost.  I think they'd be sensitive to it.
