I can think of 3 options to wipe the MBR:

1) Boot from the XP CD into umm recover mode?  F8?  You get to a prompt and
can run fdisk /mbr

2) If you have a DOS boot floppy, you can run fdisk /mbr on that.
freedos.com (.org?) should have some downloadable floppy images that could
be used.

3) I think on the linux rescue you can also do something like:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=2048 count=1

You may have to up the count.
