Ethernet device sit0

Greetings,

    I am trying to get a Dell C400 laptop attached to my local Ethernet.  
The C400 has an Ethernet port built in, but SuSE 9.3 detects it as 
sit0.  YaST does not offer it as a networking device.

    Is this another WinModem type thing that Linux is frozen out of?

    I attached a USB port extender with an Ethernet port (among other 
things).  Linux detected it on boot and assigned it eth0.  I haven't 
coupled it to the network yet, because I wanted to explore an odd 
result.  Ping sends and receives error free packets to any of the 
network computers from the c400 - with the Ethernet cable unplugged!  
USB hardware error, I assume.
