Stupid question regarding Thunderbird and IMAP

I've seen Thunderbird and other IMAP clients be completely incapable
of creating nested folders after the parent is created.
For example, if you have INBOX and then create INBOX/foo you can not
then create INBOX/foo/bar. You must create INBOX/foo/bar first, then
you can add sub-folders to INBOX/foo. You can even delete
INBOX/foo/bar immediately after creating it and still add sub-folders
to INBOX/foo later, so long as INBOX/foo was initially created as a
folder capable of having subfolders.
I've seen this behavior with tbird, mozilla, and at least one or two
other clients, and I believe I've seen it with both uwimap and
definitely with cyrus on the server side.
