I have been following this thread with some interest, and found it 
fascinating
that the battery caused such issues.

I have had some odd behaviors in older desktops, which I attributed to a 
poor
design/flaky BIOS (they were cheap motherboards), but subsequently replaced
batteries on some and they are working fine for an in-house project. We had
thought they were simply better units, now I will have to reevaluate the 
rest.
