   While it'd certainly take some serious work, I can't think of any technical 
reason why you couldn't -- and that would probably put the speed issue to bed 
once and for all.

   And of course, that possibility was likely one of the reasons Microsoft was 
so worried about Java that they resorted to breaking the law to try to kill 
it.
