Linux on old laptop - still trying...

With Ubuntu, you used to be able to do a "server" install, which I believe
was a more minimal install than the regular Ubuntu install. However, I've
only just started playing with the new Ubuntu LiveCD/installation hybrid, so
I'm not sure how you would go about it. Perhaps it is still be an option
before it boots up?

For lower end systems, I tend to use just a straight basic Debian install
and I'm usually around 350-400MB, even with X (with a lightweight window
manager like xfce or windowmaker), firefox/mozilla, etc.
