Thanks everyone for the suggestions on how to capture license plate information. In the end we took a low tech approach. This past Friday night we moved all our vehicles off the street and my son-in-law and I sat out in one of our cars waiting to see if the shooters would show up again. Sure enough they came directly down our street and shot at our neighbor's pick-up truck. My son-in-law could see the shooter leaning out of the car window using what appeared to be a very rapid firing pellet gun. Since the engine in my car was running I flew out behind the car following them for about a block with my lights out. They must have noticed that something was behind them because they sped up to about 45-50. As we both turned the corner at a stop sign I got close behind them and then turned on my high beams. We followed them for about two blocks and were easily able to read their license plate. My son-in-law in the adrenalin rush was repeating the number, transposed no less, and I kept repeating it out loud until we got it right.

Interestingly my neighbor, who had been out on the town with a friend showed up and I was able to show him the damage to his truck. The shooter hit his driver's side door a couple of inches low and in almost exactly the same spot as they had hit my daughter's car two weekends earlier.

I called the Manchester police last night to follow up and they said that the plate was registered to a driver who didn't live in Manchester. They said that Monday morning a detective would be investigating the car/driver. This is a bit disappointing but then I suppose for a low level crime like this they just work 9 to 5. BTW, no one came back last night to try to shoot at anything ;^). I suspect the people who were in that car are waiting for the shoe to drop.

Another bit of good news. My neighbor said that his father is a retired police officer. I suspect this will result in a bit more activity...
