For what it's worth, when Etch is stable, this won't happen anymore.  Packages 
don't disappear from the stable distribution, but testing can have things 
move around and/or disappear for some time.  Since Etch will be stable soon, 
these problems are limited-time problems.

That said, typically, I can find packages I've installed in the past 
in /var/cache/apt if I need to reinstall them.  Unless you've run apt-get 
clean, you ought to find a lot of stuff in there.  

Anyway, sounds pretty frustrating.  My workaround is to work on 5-year old 
hardware that I don't feel like upgrading ;-).  I don't necessarily suspect 
that others would go so long without upgrading, but the older I get the more 
fun I have spending money on things that aren't my computer.
