Well, something must be different, or they'd behave identically. :)
The same builds were used on all the servers? What about the
hardware? Any correlations there?
I take it this is some kind of application server for LTSP, X
terminals, or the like. (Why else would one run KDE on a server?)
Are all the X clients the same in terms of their hardware and software
configuration?

Hmmm. And only on KDE stuff. Hmmm. Do you see this behavior on
the "kdeinit" process as well?
Does "free" actually show more storage being used?

There are some knobs that control diagnostic output in
/etc/kde3/kdebugrc (or /opt/kde3/etc/ or whatever), but I've never
used them.
You could always attack the problem with a debugger, but KDE's a
big, complicated software system. That's more than my skills can
advise on. Others here might be able to offer insight in this
department.
