In the "mythtv-setup" program where you set up the tuners, you can give
each tuner a priority (it's called something different) for recording.
Myth can be quirky in its handling of multiple tuners when combined with
live TV viewing. I don't watch much live TV (basically 5 min. of CNN to see
what the corporate news is talking about), but I've had Myth tell me that my
watching live TV would conflict with a recording schedule. Myth gave me
several options, telling me I could override it, but I was baffled why it
didn't use one of the tuners that weren't in use. I let it boot me off, and
immediately went back to live TV with Myth deciding to use another tuner.

I haven't looked at the code, but I get the impression that the DB is used
pretty heavily. The database can run on any machine; to Myth it's just an IP
address and MySQL username/password login.
