You do need to set up X11 for your particular combination of video
card, output port, LCD and their combination. I spent the holiday
weekend hacking the xorg.conf to get my TP A31p / Radeon Mobility
FireGL 7800 M7 to put VGA output onto a Samsung 23" LCD. Video is
intensive to the hardware and finicky about the right settings. My
hacking worked, but I'm nowhere near done -- video was choppy, then
gone, then better, then worse, then good, then great, but the aspect
ratio is still wrong - too tall, too narrow. Update: found the 'W'
key would solve my resolution problem.

See above. I think the vesa driver is the lowest-end solution, and
you want a driver written for your card.
