I haven't played with synaptic yet.  aptitude, from my understanding,
is a re-write of the apt-get dependency resolving routines, but I'm
not entirely clear on that either (I really ought to go read up on
this stuff... ;)  

aptitude, if provided no command line args drops into a dselect-like
system, but is significantly more usable.
