"Reasonably priced" and "RAID" don't always go together, I'm afraid.
Often, the manufactuers are charging for the value they give (i.e.,
availability), not the component costs. They get away with it because
it's still worth it.
Promise has always been a "bottom of the barrel" vendor. The only
thing worse than Promise, in my experience, was stuff so bad it didn't
even have a recognizable brand name. Promise's "high-end" stuff was
barely usable.
In the past, I've had good luck with both MegaRAID (currently owned
by LSI Logic) and 3Ware, although I haven't gotten new stuff in a
while.
