I think you've found the best option, since you're so inclined.
A friend of a friend started an audiophile speaker company, just
because of the margins. Yeah, he knew what a good speaker sounded
like, but wasn't otherwise remarkable in the field. The company is
all about savvy marketing, making nice packages for audiophile
magazines to use for reviews*, and selling goods for 10x+ over cost.
They use good parts, sure, but you've seen what those cost.
Apparently everybody is happy with this arrangement, including the
customers.
Coming back around, I'm wondering what kind of sound I'm actually
going to get from my MythTV box, with the integrated sound card.
Both PCI slots are now filled with video in and out, so I'll have to
live with it or use the SPDIF connector to the amp. If the stores
weren't all closed today I'd have the proper 1/8" to RCA adapters to
find out... ;)

* Can you believe anybody would buy speakers, mail-order, based on a
magazine review without hearing them first?! "High-end" customers do!
