Its actually IEC958, and you wanted it unmuted (aka enabled) if you're pushing 
audio out via spdif, but yes, that's usually the primary knob to twiddle. 
Other more sensible sound cards like the Audigy have a knob called "digital 
output" with the options to "enable" and "disable" it, but same difference.
