I heard that, too.

At the time, I assumed they meant LVM snapshots, which is a little
bit beyond that. LVM implements COW (copy-on-write) functionality.
However, the filesystem doesn't really know about that, so you're not
far off.
However, a Google for "ext3 snapshot" yielded some interesting
