using fc6. unable to access cdwriter through gnome interface

My main desktop computer is running FC6 with Gnome. The hardware
includes an IDE CDRom and a scsi CDwriter.
ls -l /dev/cd*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Apr 18 08:34 /dev/cdrom-hdc -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Apr 18 08:34 /dev/cdrom-sr0 -> scd0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Apr 18 08:34 /dev/cdrw-sr0 -> scd0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Apr 18 08:34 /dev/cdwriter-sr0 -> scd0
In the Gnome/Places/Computer list the CDRom is listed, but the writer is
not. This is a minor nuisance when burning CD's. Today I decided to
figure out how to tell Gnome about the cdwriter. However, I've wasted
entirely too much time googling and grepping without getting anywhere.
I finally realized that gnome was relying on hal for hardware info. The
command hal-device lists 1939 lines of stuff, but excludes the scd0
device. (Actually it also misses my scsi tape drive) However, udevinfo
shows it and the cdwriter works fine using xcdroast.
udevinfo -q all -n /dev/scd0
P: /block/sr0
N: scd0
S: cdrom
S: cdrom-sr0
S: cdwriter
S: cdwriter-sr0
S: cdrw
S: cdrw-sr0

E: ID_MODEL=CD-R_PX-W1210S
E: ID_REVISION=1.04

E: ID_TYPE=cd

I am hoping that y'all can kick me in the right direction. Is there a
way to manually add the scsi cdwriter? (I did run hal-device --add
which created a device which I could see in hal-device-manager, but it
was not part of the gnome computer devices.) Is this worth pursuing?
