  Most of the "tiny" distros I've tried have been oriented more
towards small install media (so they can run from a CD or USB flash
drive), and not smaller RAM.  Indeed, some of them need more RAM,
because they expect to use a RAM disk to cache the boot media.

  You might want to given Debian a try.  In my experience, it's the
best general-purpose distribution that also allows you to keep the
base install to a minimum and tweak things for older systems.

  According to the Debian website, Debian 4.0 was released
*yesterday*, so you'll be starting at the right time in their release
cycle.  :)  And the minimum requirements are given as 48 MB RAM and
500 MB HDD, so I think you're in good shape there.
