  Are you using full paths to the files?  For example, /tmp/smbmsg and
/tmp/smbmsgerr?  (Those may or may not be a good idea in the long run,
but they're good for debugging.)

  Try turning up the logging level (debug level) and check the Samba
log files.  Samba can be *insanely* verbose if you ask it to.
