One thing that mystifies about purchasing one of these "erector set" notebook computers - they are definitely more expensive than buying a ready to use notebook from Sam's Club or places like Circuit City, Best Buy or Staples. When any of the retailers has a sale, notebooks can be had for relatively small money. Of course rolling your own means that you know what is inside but there is always the possibility of smoking the system with a misplaced screw. Still, no Microsoft "tax" and the system builders I talk with claim that these systems (MSI & Asus) are reliable.

P.S. A couple of other places to think about - www.emperorlinux.com and www.linuxcertified.com . I haven't dealt with either of these companies but EmperorLinux was at Linux World in Boston recently and they seemed to really know what they were doing.

In my experience you want to pay careful attention to the graphics chip set used by the system. I've also had lot's of problems with the ACPI support but newer distros such as Ubuntu and probably anything recent from SUSE, RedHat should be good as well. One other area that gives heart burn is the choice of wireless chip set. Broadcom is especially painful.
www.resllerratings.com gives RKComputer a 10 out of 10 rating but bear in mind this is only based on a dozen buyer reviews.

P.S. Until you mentioned RKComputer I had never heard of them...

Hi,
Does anybody have recommendations for an MSI /Asus laptop ?
I am planning to use it for Java/C++ development (need to run eclipse), general browsing and editing documents with Open office.
Any recommendation on the following retailer is also appreciated.
http://www.rkcomputer.net/store/
Thank you,
