Need help with new monitor

I'm running an old copy of debian sarge. I came in this morning and found
that someone had taken my old lcd monitor and replaced it with a different
one that was wider. The new monitor runs at 1440x900 native and I was
running at 1280x1024. Here's the catch: The specs for the new monitor does
not give the min and max horiz and vert syn rates. (I kid you not). It's a
Gateway FPD1975W 19" LCD. I changed the SubSection Display to add the
native resolution:

         SubSection "Display"
                 Depth 24
                 Modes "1440x1440" "1280x1024"
         EndSubSection

but if the 1280x1024 is removed then X fails to start with frequency out
of range. If it's left in then it drops to 1280x1024. The old frequencies
that are still in the configfile (for lack of anything else to try) are

         HorizSync 30-85
         VertRefresh 50-160

(seems reasonable)

Does anyone have any clue where to start with this beast?
