I've got a widescreen that runs 1680x1050, but I think a lot of the
difficulties may be the same.
I turned off the DDC options for both the video card and display, hard-coded
the timings (which I found online), and used 915resolution, which is
necessary to get some common Intel cards to support resolutions other than
your typical ones. Some combination of these tactics will likely work for
you, but it's a bit of trial and error unfortunately (or at least always has
been for me).
