My Ubuntu Installation Experience Last Week [WAS: Re: Debian resource]

Hi, md... [and all my friends from gnhlug]

I concur wholeheartedly with your comments re
Ubuntu... Why?

Last week I downloaded the ISO image of the latest Ubuntu from
the net and burned a CD ROM (on my windoze XP machine :-)> ,)
took it upstairs and installed it on my target machine for Linux. The
entire process from Time-Warner cable modem download through
a slick, working Linux GUI on the screen was unbelievably quick
compared to my first Slackware Linux installed in 1995...
[I received some excellent information re my questions about
Ubuntu's apparent (to naive me) lack of a root login name by
posting a query last week to the Rochester NY area's LUGOR,
the local equivalent of gnhlug hence their CC of this message. ]

Now my next task among many is getting the XEmacs and Perl
tarballs figured out and working on my wife's former laptop with its
broken LCD display anchored to my ancient 21" Mitsubishi
elephant of a CRT monitor -- so that I can return to my E-lisp and Perl
applications from years ago as well as finally figure out how to re-code
my 2006 WWW site using Xemacs or other Linux tools instead of the
pain and frustrations of its present MS Frontpage representation...

         Live Long and Prosper
