I read the same details when I ran into this problem before, on this very 
machine, just a few weeks ago actually.  But, I partitioned a larger drive in 
Knoppix and just couldn't get it going in Win98 still.  Perhaps the 
motherboard had some limitations too - I can't be sure, but it seemed plenty 
modern enough.

A <64GB drive just makes it easier.
