Opinions about LaCie wanted

Only one data point; it was a 500G USB "drive" that was actually a
pair of 250G drives.  Unfortunately, the dual drives did not give it
a performance advantage; it was dog slow.  No, I don't remember any
numbers, and I no longer have access to it.

It was also *very* hot.  We had it in a server lab with dedicated A/C
and an ambient temp of around 65, with lots of air flow.  The case was
still uncomfortably hot to the touch.

Like I said, only one data point, but if I were spending my money, it
wouldn't be on LaCie.
