And, for the home user who just wants some basic accounting
capability, and doesn't want to fight with the bloated GUI that
GnuCash has become, there's also "ledger", which is not only a
full-fledged double-entry accounting system, but can be used to do
things like track commodities, inventories, currencies, time spent on
projects (cost/hour calculations), etc.  AFAICT, it beats GnuCash in
functionality.

The greatest thing about it, IMO, is that the ledger itself is fully
contained within a flat ascii text file, which you can operate on with
the editor of your choice, and all the reporting is done via command
line.

If you need graphs and pretty pictures, ledger <bunch o' options> | gnuplot

Ledger could be used for small businesses too, I know of some who use
it for that.  Ledger was written by John Wiegely, and can be found here:
