VPN recommendations?

I have co-workers with laptops they take home and use remotely.  They 
are always complaining about how accessing files is very slow.  I, on 
the other hand, just use VNC to connect to my desktop and it's as if I'm 
right there in the office with just a minor delay.  Additionally, I use 
VNC over SSH to remotely support the PCs at my wife's office.  Depending 
on what this guy really needs to do, this might be an easier solution.
