I just replaced my DD-WRT box with a pfSense (FreeBSD/m0n0wall-
derived) box last night to accomplish a similar task. I've installed
several for commercial accounts. It even does hot failover. pfSense
allows me to sell a hot-failover firewall for 1/3 of the Cisco
pricetag and alot more features and freedom too. I haven't yet found
a scenario where I can't replace a PIX and its tortuous config with a
point-n-click pfSense.
It has OpenVPN but I just turned on PPTP for quick-n-dirty
gratification.
I have OEM hardware for commercial customers but I used an old via C3
box with two onboard NIC's and an extra PCI NIC. Boot off a crummy
old CD drive and store your config file on a $14.87 usb flash stick
(I just got back from WalMart with one for this purpose - NewEgg has
'em for $6).
