>>> Did the laptop come with restore/re-install media?
It comes with a restore partition (on what we call
/dev/sda2 or WINDOWS/D), and I purchased a CD, too.
And, no, I don't trust the veracity of this recovery media - I suspect it will simply wipe what I had and reinstall everything to factory defaults. Which, in my particular case, isn't tragic, as I don't have anything useful/critical on the Windows partition.
But, I'd rather not have to find out...
I'm not familiar with CentOS, so I need to bone up on it before I decide what, if anything, I'm going to do. Fortunately, I didn't buy openSuSE - I downloaded it and burned a DVD, which is all I feel
like paying SuSE/Novell these days. As I mentioned,
I did try to install FC6, but that ran aground - I
suspect that this may be due to a known problem with
the x86_64 installer on Anaconda/FC6, but don't know
for sure.
Anyway, thanks for your observations and help,
Bayard
