There is. They're called cell phones. My own personal
idiosyncrasies aside, most people love them. They're voice, email,
IM, calendar, address book, music player, TV, etc., all rolled into
one.
I've even seen news articles about how watch sales are dropping in
the youth market, as kids these days use their cell phones to check
the time instead. The wrist watch is as dead as the horse and buggy;
it just hasn't finished happening yet.
Just wait until technology advances to the point where sound and
video can be fed directly into human sensory perception. Audio will
come first. I predict we will see implanted audio communication
devices ("phones") within ten years. Implanted hearing aids already
exist; combine that with a Bluetooth hands-free kit and you're there.
Video will take longer, but proof of concept has already been
demonstrated in lab animals.
Not all science fiction is fiction.
