Something that could run my house, measuring and regulating everything.

Sensors to measure temp/humidity everywhere and graph them
energy use
Electric usage per outlet/socket
Hot water/hot air/cold air
Burgler alarm
Christmas/walkway/driveway lights
Driveway sensors
Active heating vents
Adjust temperature according to occupancy.
   Taking into account historical lag, outside temperature

Guide to reducing energy by shifting dishwashing/laundry/etc
Drape controls to let sunlight in for solar heat/close to insulate, keep sun
out for cooling

Solar hotwater control
Garden monitoring
Weather station

Feed all this into a web server that can be browsed/controlled from a
mythtv/tivo/zipit/psp/audry/cell phone/computer.

Oh, and make it fairly easy to setup.  And cheap.  And reliable enough for
the non computer spouse :-)
