Errr, if you increase compatibility such that more users get the same
experience as those with compatible gear..... Huh?!

You mean, increasing compatibility such that more users are *using*
compatible gear?  No matter *what* you do to increase hardware
compatibility, someone who is NOT using compatible gear can never
expect to get the same experience :)

I understand you were quoting someone else and those aren't your words... :)
