I routinely use the CD version of Knoppix to rescue damaged NTFS 
partitions. I have run into a number of cases where Windows couldn't 
mount the broken NTFS partition but the NTFS driver included with 
Knoppix would.

Another interesting tidbit - the Acer came with Vista Home Premium 
pre-installed. The machine running Vista will usually not sleep properly 
    but Ubuntu works perfectly. A case where a system came with Windows 
"pre-broken".
