Indeed :) SAGE/USENIX recently (within the last year) published a book
about configuration management, which, IMO, was disappointing from the
perspective of a document to help me solve a problem. It was,
however, extremely informative of just how complex this issue is or
can become. Just as a quick example, it's an extremely small step
from wanting to manage host configs in the form of Hostname/IP/MAC
addresses or creating DNS/DHCP config files to wanting to also track
things like installed software packages for each host. It's too easy
for the scope of this type of project to snowball out of control like
the Big Dig (and (scaled for proportion) spend as much money, time,
and effort solving the wrong problems in the end :)
