  They may be "unlikely", but they sure do happen a lot.

  When these problems happen, the cards usually talk just fine, and
you can usually "ping" and do other simple diagnostics, but put a
heavy traffic load on and everything goes to hell.

  I suspect it's that one end can send so much faster than the other
that buffers fill up and frames start getting dropped by the switch.
The Ethernet stuff is all Working As Designed, but that doesn't mean
your computers will successfully transfer data.
