Windows-Like Problem with Gnome

Hopefully someone can point me to a possible solution to this problem.
Using Debian ID and Gnome. Initially when I inserted a USB stick, an
icon for it appeared on desktop and I could browse, etc files on it.
No doubt after some upgrade, that behavior stopped. In the "computer"
folder, when I plug in the USB stock an icon for it briefly appears and
then disappears. If I insert a CDROM, everything works fine and icon
shows up still. USB device is seen and recognized fine. I can
manually mount and unmount it fine. For some reason it is being
mounted and then unmounted immediately after being inserted. Thought?
