It's also useful when you want to do parlor tricks like this:

  time ssh marvin.lab4.terranbase2.nasa.org.mars cat </etc/motd | diff /etc/motd -

...just to make sure the network pipe between here and Mars is doing
OK.

(if this example doesn't work for you, it must have something to do
with the port-knocking scheme...keep trying though...)
