Thunderbird stupid about X traffic?

...and I want to confirm that VNC is indeed able to
push the bits efficiently enough that Thunderbird is
now tolerable.  As I mentioned, some other X apps seem
to work OK directly over the wire (ie.  X server at
home, X client at work) but not Thunderbird.
