Here's how I've been setting mine:
PS1='\033]0;\h:\w\007\r\u@\h:\w\n\t \d \$ '
This sets the xterm title to host:cwd, and the prompt to
user at host:cwd (newline) time weekday month day (uid==0?'#':'$')
The CWD often gets fairly long, so I spilled the date and time
onto a second line.
I typically have dozens of xterms open, many running screen
sessions with multiple screens, and some of them can sit idle
for months at a time. With this prompt, I can always tell
at a glance all the context I need about a particular session.
