I have a ThinkPad T61 purchased right around the start of the year,
exact same card reader and FireWire controller (they're driven off the
same chipset), and everything works just fine w/2.6.24 and 2.6.25
kernels. :)

(Well, actually, I've not tried anything but FireWire devices and SD
cards, but they both work just fine).

If I recall correctly, the suse preload is SLED10, which has a 2.6.16
kernel, so quite dated. I'm assuming you're also stuck with an ipw3945
wireless controller, and don't have the option to upgrade, which is
because SLED10 doesn't support any of the other options in a T61. I went
with a non-linux-edition custom build myself, primarily so that I could
upgrade to the iwl4965 (802.11n) wireless controller.
