With a hang, the kernel may actually be doing something, and may
eventually 'unhang'. Why, I have no idea, but I suspect the clock
watchdog may do something to fix it. In those cases, the system
eventually recovers, and you can now see dmesg logs that may say what
happened.
Do you have the hangcheck-timer module running?
