7:20   Where Penguins Dare to Roam -
           Linux under the Antarctic Ice Shelf
           presented by David McPike

        David will present Project S.C.I.N.I., the Submersible Capable
        of under Ice Navigation and Imaging.

        Marine science in the Antarctic is hampered and facilitated by
        ice. The frozen surface of the Southern Ocean that surrounds the
        continent of Antarctica provides a stable platform that one can
        walk and drive on, allowing for oceanography without getting
        seasick. However, one has to get through the ice to access the
        sea, and the bigger the hole you have to make the more difficult
        it is. Project SCINI is building a remotely operated vehicle
        (ROV) that fits through a 15 cm hole, which can be drilled by
        one person in under an hour. With this new ROV, they can reach
        new locations under the ice that have previously been too remote
        or too deep to access.

        They are using an Elphel 353 video camera for main navigation,
        an open-source (hardware and software) camera which runs the
        Linux 2.6 kernel and the lighttpd webserver with PHP. The
        camera's software and FPGA code are licensed under GPLv3. David
        will discuss the project and describe his work on the camera and
        the networking technology used to deliver data and power down
        the 1000' tether.

        David has eleven years experience in network engineering and
        Unix administration, but he's really been a geek since helping
        his brother input BASIC programs out of Antic magazines on his
        first computer, an Atari 800, at age six. He got hooked up with
        the United States Antarctic Program out of Denver, Colorado
        about seven years ago and has been fascinated by the Antarctic
        ever since.
