Setting these systems up is pretty easy.  Debugging them is a bitch,  
especially when it's something like, "I get an echo on this line, but  
only when it's from this exchange and then only sometimes."

Wireshark has a nice VOIP module that can be helpful, but often the  
problems aren't your fault and you have to get a 3rd party to fix  
something.  If you can get ahold of someone on that end who can take  
a pcap file you're golden, but getting to him can be difficult or  
impossible.  Access to competent techs is one reason you might chose  
one vendor over another, even if he has higher rates.

Start small, use a canned solution, then expand it, then roll your  
own, and then you might understand how it all works.
